Although there are usually equal (or sometimes better) alternatives to the best software applications on Windows, this is not always the case. We have previously covered use of the VirtualBox tool to create virtual machines which run inside your normal operating system, and this is one method for accessing Windows software on an OS X computer (or vice versa), but it is heavy-handed. Especially if you only intend to use one application.
For Mac owners, a more efficient method (particularly for those interested in running the Windows application and not Windows itself) is to use WineBottler, a free open source tool that converts Windows programs into OS X programs so that they can be run natively.
It sounds too good to be true, but it actually works. WineBottler is a 'wrapper' interface for Wine, an open source API layer that allows Unix based operating systems to run Windows applications. Read on to learn more.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • 1

Navigate to the download page and grab the DMG file for WineBottler. Mount the file and then drag both Wine and WineBottler into your Applications folder (Wine is the environment and WineBottler the front-end that you will use to access it).

  • Launch WineBottler by clicking the entry in the Applications folder. When the interface appears, it is divided into three main sections - Existing Prefixes, Install Predefined Prefixes and Create Custom Prefixes. Select the Create Custom Prefixes tab.

  • 3

You will need a Windows installation file (such as an .exe, or executable file) to continue. This is a file that will not normally run on your Mac, so if you do not have one then you are in the right place - just head over to the Windows downloads and select an application like you would like to run.

  • In WineBottler, click Select File and locate the Windows installation file. If the file is an executable file with the extension .exe then check the Copy Only box.

  • 5

If you wish to create a standalone Mac version of the installer that can be run on other OS X machines that do not have WineBottler installed, check the Self Contained box. Check the Silent Install box and then click Install.

  • Select a file name for the Mac installer, and choose a location on your computer to save it to. Click OK and WineBottler begins to create an OS X version of the Windows application. Once this process is complete, check the folder you specified for the new file.

Can you delete dmg files after installing. If you don't need them, you can delete installer files. If you plan on reinstalling OS X from scratch (or should you need to uninstall and reinstall a specific application), having installers in a folder on an external hard drive can come in handy and save you time, as you don't have to download them again.

  • 7

Double-click the new file to launch the application and begin the installation process. The installer will look and feel exactly the same as it would on a Windows environment. Follow the on-screen prompts and allow the application to install itself to the emulated Window drive on the Wine environment.

  • Once installation is completed, the application will launch automatically and can be used just as if it were running on Windows.

Tips & Advice

  • Portable applications, e.g. ones that do not require installation, work best with WineBottler. This is because you do not have to go through the installation process each time you wish to use the application.
  • Not all Windows applications can be run in WineBottler, although many of them do.
  • Creating standalone installers that run on any Mac will use up more disk space. This is because the Wine libraries must be packaged alongside it, so it can run on an OS X system that does not have WineBottler installed.

PIPP Downloads‎ > ‎

installing-pipp-on-macos-with-winebottler

I am still planning to produce a native version of PIPP for macOS, but as this is not likely to happen soon here are some notes on using WineBottler to run PIPP on macOS. Note that running PIPP on a Mac can be achieved using other approaches such as basic Wine, Wineskin or CrossOver but I tried WineBottler first and it worked so that is what I have documented here.
These instructions were successfully tested (August 2018) on my MacBook Pro running macOS High Sierra.

1) Download WineBottler from http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/

For this test I downloaded the WineBottler 1.8.6 Stable version, ignoring the development version. Follow the website instructions carefully to get past the advert page and download the .dmg file.

2) Install Wine and WineBottler

Double-click on the WineBottler DMG file and in the resulting dialog drag the Wine and WineBottler icons to the Applications folder icon.
Download the 32-bit version of PIPP from this website and extract the .exe file from the .zip file if required.
Note that the there will probably be a security pop-up asking if this Application should be opened as it was downloaded from the internet, you will need to give it permission to continue.

Go to the 'Advanced' page of the WineBottler Application and ensure the options are selected as shown below. Note that the Program Installation file is the 32-bit version of PIPP that was downloaded in step 3) and that dotnet40 is required to be selected in the Winetricks list.

6) Create the PIPP App Bundle

Click the Install button to begin creating the App Bundle.
In the Save As dialog that opens, set the name of the generated App Bundle to be PIPP then click the Save button.

WineBottler will run for a short time and then PIPP's graphical installer will open.
Use the installer as usual, selecting the default options, but do not bother installing the Ut Video Codec for Windows when asked.
After working through PIPP's installer, WineBottler will open a dialog to select the correct Start file for the App Bundle. This should be set as shown here:

After selecting the Start file the PIPP App Bundle will be generated.

7) Drag the PIPP App Bundle to the Applications folder and run

The generated App Bundle that can be dragged to the Applications Folder like any other application and run in the normal way.
Note that on the first run PIPP runs it takes a little time to set up its Wine environment and for me popped up this error message:

However, after dismissing this error message PIPP runs fine.
